The United Nations Association of Greater Philadelphia and the Ethical Humanist Society of Philadelphia are organized a themed celebration of the 63rd anniversary of the adoption of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights Day.

Here we are tabling along with several other human rights and other organizations in Philadelphia. There was a celebratory overlay, as we toasted the great legacy of Eleanor Roosevelt, and Christiaan Morssink, president of UNA-GP, discussed the moral and practical value of the sheer existence of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. Yet, he explained, much work is needed. Hence this year's theme:

Are There Disposable People? The Case of Trafficking. Guest speaker Hugh Organ, Philadelphia Anti-Trafficking Coalition gave a powerful presentation on all the work that's been done locally on the issue.

Oxfam America is currently recruiting new volunteers for 2012-2013. If you are interested in

Join the Oxfam Action Corps to support women farmers, fight global hunger, and build a better food
system! You will meet great people and work together to change laws that can save lives, defend the

Congress is threatening to cut support for poverty-fighting foreign assistance, including for programs that:

Feed more than 46 million of the world’s poorest people,
Prevent more than 114,000 children from being born with HIV,
Save 3 million lives through immunization programs, and
Help poor people lift themselves out of poverty.

It’s up to us to speak up for those whose lives are changed – and saved – by this funding. Congress is about to finalize the budget for next year and years to come. Before they do, we need you to make a quick call to send them a clear message: don’t cut poverty-fighting foreign assistance.

Oxfam: Last minute package breathes life into UN Climate Talks

Urgent action is now needed to get the global deal back on track

The UN climate talks are off the life-support machine, following a last-minute agreement that gives the Kyoto Protocol a lifeline, says international agency Oxfam. It establishes a global Climate Fund and, while falling short of the emissions cuts needed, lays out a path to move towards them – crucially moving the world closer to the global deal that eluded last year’s summit in Copenhagen.

The deal’s Climate Fund will be designed by a committee with a strong voice for developing countries, which should ensure that life-saving finance will be delivered to those who are most vulnerable to the effects of climate change. The Climate Fund will be a major channel for adaptation finance, helping to plug the gap in adaptation funding, so that vulnerable communities have the resources they urgently need.

Meanwhile, the emissions cuts pledged after Copenhagen have been set as a minimum, with an expectation to raise them according to the demands of climate science. Urgent work is needed in the coming months to raise the targets to the scale needed to avoid catastrophic climate change, and put in place the compliance measures that will ensure real emissions reductions take place.

Oxfam International Executive Director Jeremy Hobbs said: “Negotiators have resuscitated the UN talks and put them on a road to recovery. This deal shows the UN negotiations can deliver. There is now hope for action to help the millions of poor people who are already struggling to survive the effects of climate change.

“With lives on the line, we must now build on this progress. Long-term funding must be secured so the Climate Fund can start to deliver, helping vulnerable communities protect themselves for the climate impacts of today and tomorrow.”

There are issues that need to be addressed, including finding the sources of new, long-term money to help fill the Climate Fund. An opportunity has been missed to establish levies on international aviation and shipping, which could have raised substantial new resources for fighting climate change in poor countries. This issue must be revisited with urgency next year. The concerns of women should be put at the heart of the new fund to ensure that those who are among the most affected, receive the funding they need.

Now we need a renewal of political will to drive these negotiations forward to a global deal. Many of the most difficult issues remain. We will not be able to offer a safe future for vulnerable women, men and children unless governments realize that we swim together or sink together. Our challenge is to elevate our vision and commit to the deep emissions cuts that are urgently needed.

Busy Fall for the Philadelphia Oxfam Action Corps!

It's been a busy fall 2010 so far for the Philadelphia Oxfam Action Corps! We have many excellent new volunteers and we have been participating in events to raise awareness of issues related to global hunger, climate change, and the impact of climate change on small farmers around the world.

First, in September, over a dozen Oxfam volunteers took part in the Stand Up! Against Poverty Day by helping out at the Philabundance Community Food Center for the day, stocking cans and serving food to those in need. We then gathered for a group picture and discussion of the significance of the event--people around the country were taking action on the same day to raise awareness of the need for a comprehensive global development strategy to eradicate poverty and meet the Millennium Development Goals.

In October, we participated in 350.org's 10-10-10 Climate action day--we joined in the efforts of the Philadelphia Interfaith Movement to "clean and green" a park in northwest Philadelphia, sign petition cards for our legislators, and come together with other organizations to express the need for action on climate change. Later in the month, we created a World Food Day-themed table in Rittenhouse Square where passersby from the surrounding Farmer's Market could experience a "walk-by" Hunger Banquet carried out with fair-trade chocolate and learn about our "Sow the Seed" campaign through our interactive display.

We have a lot of exciting events on the horizon for November and December, including some more Hunger Action/Political Action event days, and planning for an upcoming visit to our Senators' offices and for an Oxfam Hunger Banquet. We hope you'll join us at an upcoming event!

US SENATE PUSHES OFF ACTION ON CLIMATE BILL, POOR PEOPLE CONTINUE TO SUFFER

Washington, DC -- In reaction to the announcement that climate change legislation is delayed by the United States Senate, perhaps indefinitely, David Waskow, climate change program director of international humanitarian organization Oxfam America, made the following statement:

“It is critical that the US pass legislation to deal with the oil spill and impacts on communities in the Gulf Coast, but the world cannot stand to hear, again, that the Senate will not act on climate change. While Senators go on their summer break, millions of poor people on the front lines of climate change around the world can’t take a break from the droughts and floods made worse by climate pollution.”

"Without a commitment that the United States will work with other countries to solve the climate challenge and build resilience to its consequences, we cannot move forward globally. All eyes are on the US to show leadership. Summer Kickoff Events

The Philly Oxfam Action Corps has some exciting events planned to kick off the summer. On Memorial Day weekend we'll be sharing information about climate change and its impact on the poorest communities at the Piazza Flea in Northern Liberties--and we'll be collecting petition signatures to share with Senator Casey at our in-district visit on June 1st. At the June 1st visit we'll be discussing the need for the passage of a comprehensive climate bill and for funding of adaptation projects for the communities around the world most affected by climate change.

On Saturday June 12th, JOIN US for a kickoff meeting at the home of our co-organizer, Veronica. We'll be participating in a community greening project and then convening to write letters to our Senators and plan advocacy and education events for the summer. The POAC has been busy in the last few weeks with some tabling events, at which we have collected many pages of signatures on petitions to deliver to our senators--petitions that ask them to take action on climate change and its impact on the poorest people of the world. In the last couple weeks we've been @ the OK Go concert at the Theater of the Living Arts (thanks to them, their tour manager, and the venue for setting us up!) and @ the EcoFest in Kennett Square. Sisters on the Planet Film: See how four inspirational women are fighting back against climate change around the globe. This film is a production of Oxfam America.

Panel:

Marjorie Margolies, Founder and President of Women's Campaign International (WCI), former member of Congress. Women's Campaign International was founded in 1998 by Pennsylvania Congresswoman Marjorie Margolies. After serving in Congress, Ms. Margolies led the United States delegation to the United Nations Fourth World Conference on Women in 1995. At the conference 189 countries signed a Platform For Action that pledged to further the rights of women around the world. Inspired by these commitments and the astounding attendance by thousands of women participants from around the world, Ms. Margolies founded WCI to help women to achieve the goals laid out in the Platform For Action. WCI's programs help women find their voices by giving them tangible skills in areas such as leadership, public speaking, media relations, grassroots organizing, campaign strategies, voter outreach and mobilization, polling, policy analysis, and fundraising.

Munhtuya Goulden, Researcher with the Asia Center, the Academy of Natural Sciences Patrick Center for Environmental Research. Mrs. Goulden has participated as an interpreter and researcher on a joint project of the Academy of Natural Sciences, the University of Pennsylvania, and the National University of Mongolia. Research for this project was concerned with Mongolian nomadic herding women's observations about how climate change is impacting their daily lives. She has served as an Expedition Coordinator for a project funded by the National Science Foundation , International Expedition to Protected Areas of Mongolia, and also prepared a proposal to develop the International Long-Term Ecological Research (ILTER) and Ecological Tourism in protected areas of Mongolia. Mrs. Goulden has traveled extensively in Mongolia, Russia, China, Japan, Italy and France, and has over 14 years of experience coordinating international scientific expeditions, projects, events, and tours.

This week is crucial for influencing legislation on climate change- let’s reach for at least 100 calls in Pennsylvania! Today, please call Senators Casey & Specter and encourage your friends and contacts to do the same!!

Senators John Kerry (D-MA), Lindsay Graham (R-SC), and Joe Lieberman (I-CT) are changing their approach to climate change legislation in an attempt to fashion a bill that can pass the Senate. The problem? There is pressure to cut out the international provisions, including help for the world’s poorest people to prepare for the severe effects of climate change.

Leaving support for hard-hit poor communities out of a US climate bill not only undermines the pledge America made in Copenhagen to help those most affected by climate change – it also leaves billions of people in peril from worsening storms, droughts, & floods.

Monthly Member Meetings

On next monthly member meeting will be on Thursday, October 1st at 6pm. POAC will start our Fall meeting schedule by oscillate between Wednesdays and Thursdays in order to accommodate most POAC members. We sincerely apologize to those for whom this is not feasible, but we will keep you well informed with meeting minutes postings, and hope to find ways for you all to stay involved!

We will announce the meeting location as it gets closer to the date, but it will certainly be in or around center city. Please let us know if you are able to attend.

This Fall will be a busy time for us as we increase awareness to the issue of climate change and its effects on the world's poorest communities. We will be lobbying, tabling at concerts, as well as hosting hunger banquets, film screenings and letter writing events. Human Countdown: Climate Wake Up Call, in Central Park (Wollman Rink) this Sunday, September 20th! (1pm for main event, 9am for early birds) It's going to be a great event that sends a powerful message to the press and world leaders, as well as launch the Tck Tck Tck campaign’s Global Climate Wake Up Call and Climate Week NYC. We will be joined by friends from as far away as Uganda and the Pacific Islands – not to mention Mississippi – to share their story of how they are confronting climate change in their communities.

Three important points why you should attend the Human Countdown!

1. Climate change is not only an environmental issue, it's a moral one as well. Historically, the U.S. is responsible for 25% of global carbon emissions so shouldn't we be responsible for part of the cost to help those who are now being impacted by its effects? It's people who living in poor and vulnerable communities around the world who are being hit first and worst by the effects of climate change. And just because the effects of climate change aren't as visible or publicized as the results of natural disasters, this doesn't lessen its impact. Poor people should not have to pay the price of how their richer counterparts choose to live.

2. Climate change doesn't just affect developing countries. There are people living in developed countries, such as the U.S., who are impacted by increasingly volatile weather patterns (remember the gulf coast!) We can't just rebuild as before after disaster hits. We need to help communities increase their resiliency by building homes on raised platforms so that if another flood comes, people don't lose their livelihoods.

3. International adaptation financing isn't just another term for development aid. Adaptation financing goes towards helping local communities that are impacted by climate change and have the know-how to change their situations but lack the resources to do so. Some solutions are as simple as changing the crops that are grown so that they're more in sync with new weather patterns, or using more drought or flood resistance seeds, or even just raising the walls of a well so that when the floods hit low lying communities, their clean, fresh water wells don't become contaminated by salt water. These aren't just immediate solutions, but they're low cost, effective, and sustainable solutions.

People need to see the human impact of climate change, and one of the first things YOU can do is come out to the Human Countdown!!! Show world leaders that even though we live in the United States, we care about people who don't have the luxury of doing the same. Come out and give a voice to people around the world who don't. This event is a wake up call to our world leaders to let them know that time is running out for them to pass fair, ambitious and binding legislation on climate change.

Monthly Member Meetings

The Senate and American Clean Energy and Security Act bill

The Senate is currently on its August recess and POAC is planning for in-district lobby visits in order to talk to Senators Bob Casey and Arlen Specter about the Climate Change legislation currently in the Senate.

House passes Climate Change Bill (ACES)

As you may already know, the House of Representative passed the historic American Clean Energy and Security Act bill on June 26th, 2009. 219 votes in favor and 212 against, with 218 required for it to pass. This was a narrow margin, but a win nonetheless. Thanks all your hard work to educate and mobilize support for this bill and your calls to your Representatives!

If you haven't had a chance to, it would be great to contact your Representative and thank him/her for casting a vote for a clean energy future. Thank your Representative today to say "thank you" for voting to put the US on a pathway to reducing carbon emissions and also providing funding for poor communities in the US and abroad in order to survive the effects of climate change.

Now that the climate change bill passed the House we need to start gearing up for an even tougher fight in the Senate, where it will require 60 votes to pass. It is imperative that funding for international adaptation is not reduced or cut from the bill.

Oxfam efforts were acknowledged during the floor debates. Representative Payne (D-NJ) cited Oxfam as he spoke to the needs of the poor and robust funding for international adaptation, and Representative Jim McGovern (D-MA) spoke persuasively on the same topic.

Climate Change Legislation:

The American Clean Energy and Security Act (ACES) bill has been approved by the House of Representatives Energy and Commerce Committee, but faces several more hurdles in the House of Representatives since it has been referred to several other House committees with jurisdiction over it, such as the Natural Resources Committee and the Committee on Agriculture, which will debate, and possibly amend, areas of the bill relevant to their jurisdiction.

The ACES bill is expected to be voted on in the House sometime this summer, but could take longer. It is imperative that changes to the bill still address the effects of climate change on poor communities and that revenue is allocated for international adaptation.

On Wednesday May 27th, we had our first member Monthly Meeting, which will be an ongoing happening for the Philadelphia Oxfam Action Corps (POAC). It was held at Sandrina’s house in Center City and several new members attended. We discussed where the Climate Chance legislation stands in Congress, as well as upcoming POAC events and planning for future/possible screening of Sisters on the Planet, lobby visits, concerts and canvassing events. We also had a screening of Sisters on the Planet at the University of Pennsylvania’s Sweeten Alumni House last Wednesday, June 3rd. The event was a wonderful success and we had several new members who attended and learned more about Oxfam America and the human face of Climate Change. We are looking forward to more opportunities to spread the word about Oxfam, so if anyone has suggestions, please don’t hesitate to contact us and also join us at our next monthly meeting!

In Need Of Climate Change Cash

A loose coalition of international aid organizations, religious groups, environmental advocates and some businesses are lobbying Congress to include billions for international aid in the forthcoming climate change bill.

The groups argue that helping developing countries cut greenhouse gases and protect against the effects of global warming is a key to success at the international climate talks scheduled for December in Copenhagen.

"The U.S. can't go completely empty-handed to Copenhagen," said Oxfam America President Raymond Offenheiser.

Existing problems of poverty and malnutrition in poorer countries have been exacerbated by climate change, experts say, as changing weather patterns and intensified storms hurt agricultural yields and infrastructure.

Roughly 262 million people were affected by climate disasters annually from 2000 to 2004, with over 98 percent of them in the developing world, according to the Human Development Report issued last year by the United Nations Development Program.

Developing nations argue that richer countries should help them offset these effects, given that they produce significantly more of the other greenhouse gas emissions that contribute to global warming. Rich countries "containing just 15 percent of the world's population" account for almost half of carbon dioxide emissions, according to UNDP.

Connie Hedegaard, Denmark's minister for climate and energy, told reporters that a deal at Copenhagen would be impossible unless richer nations bridge the divide between developed and developing countries with additional funds.

"Politically, it must be additional, and that could be a game changer," she told reporters last week.

The UNDP estimated that by 2015, developing countries would require $86 billion a year for climate adaptation, which includes measures such as reinforcing infrastructure, making sure water supplies are potable and helping poor countries adapt to changing agricultural conditions.

Last month, 23 Democrats sent a letter to Rep. Henry Waxman (D-Calif.), pushing the Energy and Commerce Committee chairman to include "robust" international financing in his energy and climate bill. The committee is expected to vote on the bill before the Memorial Day recess.

"Comprehensive climate change legislation should devote a significant portion of generated revenues to investments in international adaptation, clean technology cooperation and forest protecting activities in the developing world," the Democrats wrote. "It is an opportunity for leadership, innovation, economic growth at home and abroad, and trust building with developing countries."

Waxman's draft bill proposes the creation of a specialized international climate change program at USAID to provide assistance to the "most vulnerable developing countries."

Some aid organizations, religious and environmental groups would like 7 percent, or $7 billion, of any revenues generated by Waxman's legislation devoted to international adaptation efforts. The funding would have to be flexible enough to help communities deal with different needs, such as reinforcing buildings to deal with flooding from melting glaciers, reducing soil erosion with reforestation programs and diversifying agriculture practices to cope with changing environmental conditions.

Religious groups cite funding for international adaptation as their No. 1 priority for the bill.

"The moral measure of climate change legislation is how it treats the poor and vulnerable in our own country and around the world," John Carr, director of justice, peace and human development for the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops, said in a statement.

Religious groups, sponsored by the faith-based, nonprofit American Values Network, are running ads on Christian radio in key districts in seven states and e-mailing more than 5.3 million evangelicals and Catholics, urging them to support climate change legislation that pays special attention to the needs of vulnerable communities at home and abroad.

The prospective funding could also help mitigate the new national security risks created by changing weather conditions, the groups argue. Droughts, famines and floods caused by global warming could destabilize regions around the world as competition increases for food and water.

"Supporting climate readiness now can help avert global instability and will save billions of dollars down the road in emergency relief and military engagement by reducing the worst effects of climate-related disasters," a group of 24 international aid and environmental groups wrote in a March letter to the heads of the House Energy and Commerce Committee and its Energy and Environment Subcommittee.

Cap and Trade: Swallow That Term

Democrats are getting their talking points in order as the climate change debate heats up this week.

On Monday, pollster Mark Mellman briefed Democratic press aides in the House on the most politically savvy ways to talk about climate change. The briefing aimed to prepare the press secretaries for the crush of coverage expected this week, after Energy and Commerce Committee Chairman Henry Waxman unveils his complex climate and energy bill.

The meeting, a weekly confab for House press secretaries, was one of the most well-attended since January, according to one participant.

The phrase "clean energy jobs" is the best way to explain the benefits of climate change legislation, according to polling presented in PowerPoint by Mellman.

Using "cap and trade" to describe the legislation - which creates an auction market for carbon emissions - is a mistake, because voters find the term confusing. Also to be avoided is "green jobs," a phrase popular with environmentalists to describe careers in renewable energy, energy efficiency and other types of sustainable technologies. Voters think the term describes white-collar jobs for highly educated professors, according to Democratic aides at the meeting.

A Rasmussen poll released on Monday found that just 24 percent of voters correctly identified the cap-and-trade proposal as dealing with environmental issues. Slightly more - 29 percent - thought the term was about regulating Wall Street, and 17 percent thought it had to do with health care reform. Thirty percent had no idea.

This just in: Please call your Representative in the US House of Representatives and urge them to sign the ‘Dear Colleague’ letter entitled “Global Warming Requires a Global Solution” and signed by Representative Donald Payne and others. Please do this on or before Tuesday, March 31st, at which time the letter closes for signatories.

Background: Representative Henry Waxman, Chair of the House Energy and Commerce Committee, plans to release a first draft of climate change legislation this Thursday, April 2. We are told that language may be stricken from the draft that supports adaptation financing. In other words, strong grassroots pressure is needed to make sure that the US Congress calls for financing to help poor and vulnerable communities to cope with the effects of climate change.

Representatives Donald Payne and four of his colleagues have drafted a “Dear Colleague” letter, below and attached, and plan to submit it to Chairman Waxman after close of business this Tuesday, March 31st. Our goal is to increase that number to 40 or more Representatives signed onto the letter by the end of this Tuesday.

Oxfam Action Corps has been asked to set up a table representing Oxfam by the Kennett Township Land Trust in Chester County.

They are opening an 82-acre Stateline Woods Nature Preserve with a Family Eco-Festival on May 9, 10am-3pm, and are asking environmental groups such as Oxfam to set-up and talk about the important issues of the day.

Event Background:
In April 2008, the Kennett Township Land Trust acquired 82 acres in Kennett Township that had been slated for development. The land, which includes fields, woods and streams, is now permanently protected for hiking, mountain biking, horse back riding and nature exploration. It was named the Stateline Woods Nature Preserve because it borders the Pennsylvania/Delaware state line. Access to the Preserve is on Merrybell Lane, off Old Kennett Road in Kennett Square, PA.
The Kennett Township Land Trust (KTLT) is a non-profit charitable organization based in Chester County, Pennsylvania. Its mission is the preservation, conservation and stewardship of natural resources, historic sites, and open spaces, including important agricultural lands and natural areas. To date, KTLT has preserved over 400 acres in Kennett Township.

-To formally open the preserve for use by the general public
-To thank all those whose support made purchasing the preserve possible
-To raise funds for KTLT through admission
-To promote awareness for KTLT and stewardship issues

Hunger Banquet season is in full swing!

Hello Everyone!

For those of you who are not familiar with Oxfam Hunger Banquets, they are an amazing interactive event that allows participants to experience firsthand how our decisions affect others in the world, in terms of poverty and hunger.

On Saturday November 15, Philadelphia Action Corps Co-Leader Carrie Leigh was asked to speak at a banquet held at the Church of the Advent in Hatboro, PA.

The banquet was organized by students from Hatboro-Horsham High School, led by Megan Strowger. Speakers also included Brian Jenkins, a Baptist Minister who founded Chosen 300 Ministries. He spoke to the attendees about his missionary trips he has led and his efforts in food distribution programs both here and abroad.

We also heard from Nurse Elaine Kemp who spoke of her travels to Peru to work in clinics where she saw numerous cases of malnutrition and domestic violence. The night was a huge success in terms of raising awareness for Oxfam and its efforts, as well as raising money for Oxfam through the purchase of tickets and raffles of donations from local merchants. Thanks to all for attending and volunteering their time to this successful event!

Just two days later, Carrie Leigh spoke at another Hunger Banquet at Philadelphia University. This event was hosted by Oxfam Change leader Cheryl Dunn and the group "Students for Social Justice". Speakers also included Sandrina DaCruz, who discussed her experiences with "Voluntary Service Overseas". Sandrina discussed her work in communities in Sri Lanka and the Maldives. Students shared what the experience meant to them, it opened many eyes to the separation of classes, and got people thinking about what they can do to change it.

Hi POAC!
Hope that you all are doing well on the dawn of this historical election of our new President and are looking forward to the new possibilities to come for this great country.
I would like to acknowledge the great work that Oxfam volunteers have been doing to make this world a better place and that we all have power and that it is time for justice!

Last Saturday, Oxfam volunteers worked at Coldplay's second concert here in Philadelphia at the Wachovia Center as we had previously done back in July.

The support we encountered was great and we were able to get over 500 signups, thanks to our hard working volunteers: Myrna, Maryam, Franklyn, Janelle, Shadora, Michael, Sharon, Pat, Nicole, Mark, Theresa, Cheryl, Heather, Logan, Kelsey, Tim, Rachel, and once again Peter Lusby!

Also, don't forget to join us this Friday 11/07/08 for our FREE film screening of Sisters on the Planet at the Circle of Hope @ 6pm. The film will be followed by a presentation by Brian Rawson, the senior organizer at Oxfam who established the Action Corps and a POAC member who will talk about her experience volunteering in developing countries and how they struggle to overcome the challenges presented by climate change. The deadline for Representatives to sign on to the Principles for Global Warming Legislation letter was last week. This letter was delivered to Speaker Pelosi and it encourages a strong environmental policy for the U.S.

The Representatives in Pennsylvania that signed on to the Letter are Representatives Fattah (District 2), Rep. Brady (District 1), Rep. P. Murphy (District 8), Rep. Schwartz (District 13), and Rep. Sestak (District 7).

On September 9, Carrie Leigh met with a legislative aide in Senator Arlen Specter's office. This was a great opportunity for us to educate the Senator on the affects that Climate Change are having on those in developing countries. The aide was very receptive of our message and is hopeful that Senator Specter can make some much needed change!

We have another lobbying visit with Representative Fattah next week, and hopefully they will be just as receptive. Please contact us if you are interested in lobbying, if you can't lobby you can always take a few minutes to write a letter to your representative and senators and tell them that you want to see legislation that will fund adaptation for developing countries that suffer due to natural disasters.

Coldplay’s Viva La Vida World Tour stops in Philadelphia!

As part of their Viva La Vida World Tour, Coldplay has invited Oxfam to inform their fans about the importance about global poverty and ways that we can all help to overcome it. The Philadelphia Action Corps was in full force last friday night at their concert at the Wachovia Center.

We were greeted by Peter Lusby, Oxfam’s tour manager for the Coldplay tour and also joined by Brian Rawson, the senior organizer at Oxfam who established the Action Corps.

The concert was a spectacular show with songs off their latest CD, and many fan favorites including “Yellow” and “Fix You”. With 17 volunteers and help from some dedicated Coldplay fans from www.coldplaying.com; the Action Corps was able to get a total of 543 signups!

Convention for the Common Good

Oxfam America attended the Convention for the Common Good this past weekend July 11th-13th at the Sheraton Philadelphia in Center City.

The Convention unified religious and social groups on the platform of common good for all people.

Many social issues such as health care, poverty, economic justice, immigration and global warming were discussion topics with community, legislative and religious leaders expressing their vision for the common good.

Philadelphia Action Corps was proud to be part of this event and promoting change to improve conditions of people living in poverty and suffering from social injustice around the world.

Hi! We are Khadija Lynch, Carrie Leigh Schurr, Nan Sato and Sandrina daCruz, Oxfam America Action Corps field organizers for Philadelphia. We have an extraordinary opportunity to create meaningful positive change during the next few months, and we need your help!

Oxfam America is an international relief and development organization that creates lasting solutions to poverty, hunger, and social injustice. The Action Corps is a volunteer initiative started by Oxfam America to inform, inspire, and mobilize public support.

There are currently Action Corps in 13 cities nationwide cultivating volunteers to start a grassroots movement. Volunteers receive ongoing support from Oxfam America, including campaign materials, policy strategies, and advice on community organizing. Each city has two trained volunteer “co-leaders” who welcome and orient volunteers throughout the year.

In our efforts, we outreach at concerts, festivals and house parties, we lobby by writing letters, calling and meeting with legislators and also advocate by appearing as guest speakers at educational institutions, community/local groups and other organizations.

This year's campaign brings awareness on how Climate Change impacts poor people in developing countries, and how to create equitable solutions to the crisis. We are asking that the US cut greenhouse gas emissions, and provide financial assistance so that the most vulnerable communities can adapt.
